Description
An introduction to the Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Act. Learn about the key elements of the legislation including: First Nation law making and ratification, highlights of the provisional federal rules and practical implications for First Nation community residents.
Participants will Learn
- The 2 key aspects of the Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Act;
- Follow a sample law-making and ratification process for First Nations communities;
- Appreciate the role and responsibility of First Nation governments;
- Name the main elements of the Provisional Federal Rules as contained in the Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Act; and
- Learn how the provisions of the Act apply to on-reserve residents.
- Learn how to participate in the INAC engagement process undertaken to develop solutions to assess and improve the Family Homes on Reserves and Matrimonial Interests or Rights Act. This engagement was undertaken as part of the the Review of Laws commitment included in the Ministers of INAC and Justice Mandate Letter.

Presenter Biographies
Christopher E. Angeconeb is a member of the Lac Seul First Nation. Chris is dedicated to advocating and advancing Aboriginal rights and interests through work with various federal government departments and agencies, First Nations organizations and private business. He enjoys working with First Nation communities and people to achieve community aspirations.
Kathy McCue is a member of the Curve Lake First Nation in Ontario. Kathy has over 30 years experience in various aspects of First Nation administration and governance. She maintains a strong commitment to community development and enjoys the opportunity to provide technical support that improves capacity and furthers the objectives of First Nation communities.
